Anza-Borrego 2010

This May we will be heading down to the beautiful Anza-Borrego State Park. And one of our favorite places in this remote and exotic region is Sandstone Canyon. We'll get there via Canyon Sin Nombre and the famed Diablo Drop-off...and, once there inside Sandstone Canyon, you are sure to feel like you've been transported into an Indiana Jones movie! With a narrow, sandy wash winding through 300' vertical sandstone walls, it is truly an ADVENTURE! This is an awesome group of trails that are full of fun and adventure. Club membership is not required, there are no event entrance fees, and all capable vehicles are welcome. Kids are welcome. You are responsible for your own food, gas, etc.

When: May 15, 2010

Where: Anza-Borrego, CA (South of Ocotillo Wells)

Time: 10am we will be hitting the trail. Expect a full day of trails so bring a lunch to eat while we wheel.

Meeting Spot: Trailhead to Canyon Sin Nombre. It is 13 miles north of Ocotillo on the S2. GPS coordinates N 32° 49' 47" W 116° 10' 9" or for entering into Google Maps: 32.830000° -116.169333°

Directions: There are two ways to get to the trailhead. First option is to take the I-8 east from San Diego for 83 miles to Ocotillo and then go north on Imperial Hwy (S2) for 13 miles.

Image

A slightly shorter route, but longer time wise, is to take the highways through Anza-Borrego. The route traveled would be via Hwy 79 south from Temecula for 37 miles then left on San Felipe Rd (S2). Turn right once you hit Hwy 78 and take an immediate left after 1/4 of a mile to get back on the S2 (Great Southern Overland State Route). Go about 34 miles and the trailhead will be on your left.

Trails: Canyon Sin Nombre, Sandstone Canyon, Fish Creek, and maybe Ocotillo Wells SVRA

We will be starting with Canyon Sin Nombre and enjoy the wind caves and the famous Diablo Drop-Offs. We will then head down into Sandstone Canyon. We will exit via Fish Creek and hopefully get to enjoy some of the Ocotillo Wells SVRA terrain.

Trail Rating: This trail is relatively easy, earning a rating of 1 for most of its length. Only the Diablo Drop-off and a section or two in Sandstone Canyon itself rate about a 3. With spotting, anyone is capable of piloting a Hummer through this run!

Hmmm, tempting....

I wonder if they cleared those boulders from the big E-quake we experienced?

I'll be checking my schedule...

Oh yeah, Seth, can you make sure we won't have any Earthquakes that day? That would be swell. :yup:

Come on, you know you want to. It's only a hop skip and a jump from your house.

The earthquake boulders should not affect our passage on the trail. I checked with another local club that ran it recently and they reported it was all good. We will see.

And done. Look forward to seeing you again. You will also have to help me remember where to stop for the mud caves.

Duh :wall:

After looking at my schedule, I realized that I am graduating on that day. I had the dates mixed up.

So, no I won't be able to go.

Bummer. I was reviewing our schedules and I won't be able to make it this time. My wife's end-of-semester choir concert is that evening and there is no way out of it for me.

I'll keep following this thread in case the event date changes.

Do you guys ever go to Hungry Valley, Ridgecrest, Stoddard, JV, Rassor, Dumont, or Imperial?
I finally know my calling in life! I'm an a asshole!
I feel sorry for all the soldiers and intelligence officers who over the last century have worked hard to defeat communism, only to have it elected by "choice".
