Postby fourfourto » Mon Jan 07, 2019 9:34 am

Hey.
forums dead no post in 2019 ?
still got the H3 167k still going strong, had to replace drivers door seal got frozen pulled out 3 years ago replaced clips lasted for a while.
Holes started to rip on seal so got new seal all's good.$81.00 with shipping. At least it was available :D
Service TPM comes up on cold days going to have to replace valves when getting new tires.
1st set I got 90K out of the duelers at 77K now still look good .
Will replace before next winter.
Anyway to charge battery in valve or replace without getting new valves?

Batteries are not replaceable, but I know many who succeeded with Vettes. But different sensor than used on Hummers. Feeling was if the sensor had to be replaced, nothing to lose by disassembling sensor to add a new battery. However, in either case, you have to remove the tire to get to the sensor, and the old style Vette sensors were very expensive as compared to the sensors used on the H3. Believe you can find aftermarket for around 30 each. They are 315 mHz sensors that are at the end of the schrader valve.

However, on a cold day a low air pressure reading does not always designate a bad sensor.

Depends on when then tires were last pressurized to their pressure (as stated on the label inside the driver door). Tire pressure will go down 1 degree for each 10 degrees drop in temp.

So if during the summer months (around 80 degrees) the tires were topped off at (example) 35 pounds, and then in the winter the temps drop to the 30s, the inside pressure will drop by 5 pounds to 30.

One way to help determine if it is temp related is:
If in the AM after a cold night, you start the vehicle and if the light says low TP (or if you drive about a half mile it says low TP), and then you drive about 5-10 miles and the light goes off, chances are it is temp related and not sensor related. As the vehicle is driven the TP will increase due to the heat generated by the rolling tire. As the tires heat up, the pressure increases and the TP sensor will register an ok pressure.

Sensors pretty much go to sleep after a set time after vehicle is parked; some will send a signal to the BCM every hour or so (can't remember how the H3 sensors work). When the vehicle starts moving and tires start rolling, the sensor wake up and start to do their signals to the BCM.

When tire warms up it goes off, there original sensors .
Still have another 10K on tires when replacing i'll change out sensors.
Took a quick look for factory duelers looks like they don't make them anymore in size needed.
1st set lasted 90K
on 2nd set will get 85K at least .Hate to change to different tire.

Sounds temp related. Check air pressure in morning before driving away and add as necessary to bring it up to whatever the Tire placard label states on the driver's door B-pillar (I believe that is where it is for the H3....been a long time).

Tires are at 35 psi cold .
h3 built june 2005 that's 13 1/2 years
I don't think the batterys last that long.

If batteries were completely dead, the warning would be on all the time and it would be a different warning (if memory serves me) cause the BCM would be detecting a complete loss of the sensor; not a low TP . But after 13 years, if the tires are being replaced it is probably a good idea to replace the sensors since you won't have to pay for a tire R&R just to replace a sensor. Murphy's law would see to the sensors going bad the day after new tires were installed.
As for longevity. It is not necessarily the length of time as much as the movement of the tire that determines the sensor battery life.
Good luck....

I'm still around too. Visit the site every month or so. The H3 is still rocking the Eaton, but I only drive her a few times a month and during bad weather.

I remember replacing my tire sensors at some point, but don't remember why. Otherwise, my girl has almost 12 years under her belt. 8)

Pulling out of Lowes today and going down the street was a 'lowered" black H3's with small tires sticking out from the hubs. Almost barfed, but did notice the UT arch plate. Can easily guess it is a SLC mall queen full of *****. :wall: :wall:
