Big Bear Harcore Adventure 2008
The official run will be John Bull. This is a hardcore trail and not for the faint of heart. This trail promises excitement and winching/strapping. Rock rash on your undercarriage is guaranteed. I highly suggest a rear locker and under carriage protection. There is a possibility of body damage. The trail has been done without any damage many times, but the risk is there due to the obstacles. Please understand that you are the driver and must make the decision.
Club membership is not required, there are no event entrance fees, and all capable vehicles are welcome. Kids are welcome. You are responsible for your own food, lodging, gas, etc.
When: May 17, 2008
Where: Big Bear Lake, CA
Time: 10am we will be hitting the trails. We will be meeting around 9:30 to air down and get started by 10. Expect a full day of trails so bring a lunch to eat while we wheel.
Meeting Spot: We will be meeting at the Big Bear Discovery Center on the North Shore of Big Bear Lake. The Discovery Center is located at 40971 North Shore Dr. (which is Hwy 38) in the town Fawnskin, which is just on the north side of Big Bear Lake across the water from the town of Big Bear.
Directions: To get there, you can take either Hwy 330 to Hwy 18 (main way) or Hwy 38 out of Redlands.
If taking Hwy 330 to Hwy 18: To get to the Discovery Center, you will not turn right at the Big Bear Lake dam. This takes you into the city of Big Bear. Instead, you will continue straight which is the beginning of Hwy 38. You will travel up and around the lake, passing through Fawnskin. After leaving Fawnskin, the Discovery Center will be on your left (north side) about 1 and half miles down on North Shore Dr (Hwy 38).
If taking Hwy 38: You will need to get to where the I-215 meets the I-10. From there, take the I-10 E and take the TENNESSEE STREET exit and turn LEFT, then go 0.4 mi and turn RIGHT on W LUGONIA AVE which is Hwy 38. Take this highway all the way to the back side of Big Bear. In Big Bear, turn right on Green Way Dr. (this is before the lake), which is the continuation of Hwy 38. Then turn left on North Shore Dr which is also Hwy 38. Go about 2 miles and the Discovery Center will be on the right. If you go into the town of Fawnskin, you have a gone a couple miles too far. If you miss Greenway Dr. and get deeper into Big Bear, you can turn right on Standfield Cutoff which takes you across Big Bear Lake. Then turn left and follow the above directions.
Trail: John Bull trail.
John Bull is the most difficult trail in Big Bear and features large rock gardens and steep hill climbs. If we happen to make good time getting through it, we can shoot over to another trail in the area. Time will tell.
This is going to be an exciting run filled with adventure and enjoyment. Damage is always possible while off-roading, especially on a hardcore trail such as this one. Please come prepared with recovery equipment if you have it and spare parts appropriate for your vehicle.
Comm: CB channel 37
Passes: None required for this trip. Generally, an Adventure Pass is required when stopping to recreate on a trail in Big Bear. However, we will not be stopping to recreate. I was told by the local ranger station that eating wouldn't be considered recreating if it was a short stop.
